OME lift kit question

Hi guys,

Ready to lift my 4Runner. It is a 04 V6, my daily driver. I don't plan to modify it too much, no heavy bumpers planned. The truck has Michelin LTX M/S2 tires. I commute about 30 miles per day on LA freeways, and occasionally do some desert dirt road driving and easy off-roading.

After some research, I am thinking about the following spring/shock set.
Front: 2885 medium springs, N90000 shocks
Rear: 2895 medium springs, 60004 shocks

Is this a good choice for my intended use? Would the ride quality be too harsh for concrete freeway driving?

Thanks,
Kevin

This is a really common scenario, one I went through myself earlier this year. I'm in the same boat, though on the other side of the country.

I did nothing more than Bilstein 5100's all around and 265/70 tires. The improvement over stock is amazing and I have never put a foot wrong off road. A lot of people pick this option for their 4Runner for a reason.

I can't comment on OME on a 4th gen, but I've had their stuff on a Jeep and a 3rd Gen 4Runner and loved it.

Like the poster above, I went with the Bilstein 5100's. I'm at 1.75" on the front with stock springs and it is level. I'm running stock size 17's but can go up at least one size if I want to. The ride is excellent. I'd highly recommend.

I commute about 40 miles a day almost all highway with almost that same set up. My rears are 896, though. I love the ride. It's stiff, but not like teeth chattering stiff. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the same set up again if I had to do it all over.

Thanks for recommending the Bilstein 5100. I like it is height adjustable. Any other advantages over the OME shocks? How is the durability?

Sometime I drive a bit fast on gravel roads in the desert. I think this is how the stock front shocks were busted...

I like your mods. But LA freeway is terrible, concrete with expansion joints. Very bumpy ride.

I'm a fan of OME, wouldn't go with anything else. Not sure why so many people like Bilsteins to be honest. People I know have had rotten luck with them but maybe it's the old on road vs off road thing.

I'm in the EXACT same boat! Got an 2008 V6 Sport with stock XREAS suspension. At first I was going to go with the 5100s and keep the stock springs. But after a lot of research, I've decided to go all OEM. We drive on some pretty rough roads in the fall for hunting/fishing and I want the vehicle as smooth as possible!

I'm going 884 coils in the front. I don't have any extra weight in the form of a bumper, etc. Careful with the 885s. They provide more lift than the 884 (about an inch I believe?).

The 884/895 combo should give me a slight rake, which I want. I think 885/895 would put you about level. I would consult ARB to be sure.

As far as shocks/struts I'm leaning towards 90000 in the front and 60004 in the rear. However a lot of ppl have the softer 90021 in the front.

Havent heard of anyone going to the firmer 60005 shocks in the rear. I'm guessing since the OEM coils are 40% or whatever it is stiffer than stock, the stiffer shocks would be way overboard.

I'm still not 100% sure what to get. Would be nice to try them out like a pair of shoes and choose what feels best. Unfortunately I'm going to have to take my best guess and hope I like it.

Shop that is an ARB dealer who I'm having do the install recommends:

2884 + 90000 front
2885 + 60004 rear

However I kind of wonder is this just what they have in stock? Is it just what most ppl get and therefore their default answer? Going to do a bit more research before I just get what they tell me to get.

Thanks for sharing you research, very informative. I will give ARB a call to confirm 885/895 is a leveled set up. I would hate to see the front is higher than the rear.

Is it necessary to buy the differential drop kit?

What's a good place to order the OME? Toytec or Wheeler's offroad?

Both Wheelers and Toytec offer great service. Both have provided me with a forum discount. Check their official vendor threads for current discount codes.

Just an afterthought. I would order the lower shockbolt guards for the rear as well. 30 bucks to help keep the body of the shock from getting bashed to heck with gravel rash.

Not a problem. I'm curious...why do you want the 885 coils in the front? Do you have a heavy bumper or something? I also have the V6 and the suspension shop where I plan to get the work done, and ARB, both recommended either the 883 or 884 front coils.

Seems if you want the "slight rake" (1" or so) look the way to go is 883/895e, or 884/895 if you have the V6 and stock bumper/no winch.

MN4RNR has a good build thread on this. Sorry don't have a link.

The 883 to 884, and 884 to 885 I believe is about a 1" jump in front end lift each time. With the 884 front coils I'm expecting 3-3.5" lift and about 2" from the 895 coils in the rear.

If you read my OME thread recently started you'll see pics posted of lifts with these these coils.

On a somewhat related note...what the heck is this diff drop kit??? I'm assuming not necessary for just a 3" or so lift from coils alone? The suspension shop where I'm buying the parts from didn't even mention this...

I don't really know what advantages there are over the OMEs, but this was my top choice because I wanted to keep the stock springs and level the truck at the same time.

I bought them for the same reason you mentioned. I don't rock crawl or anything like that, just some quick driving over back country roads. They actually work better for that purpose than anything else. The ride is extremely supple and tremendously controlled. I only have around 10k on the combo so far, but durability has been fine.

Also, everyone says the .85" setting on the shocks is level, but I did the 1.75" and it looks perfectly level to my eye.

I just want a leveled setup. 885 and 895 are medium, hoping they do the same amount of lift frong and back.

i recently (like 2 months ago) did the OME kit since my friend always used OME on his land cruisers and i liked the way they rode. i got the 884s with the 895 and the toytec 3/4 spacer to even the front and the rear and get rid of the rake. I decided to go with the 90001 and 60004 since the 90001 is supposed to be more stiff. so far so good, kinda bumpy over these bad roads we got here in nyc. I did go offloading and it held up pretty good.
I did the diff drop since the angle on my axles was a bit too much for my liking. some people don't do it but its a personal preference.
now my 265/70/17s look small, I'm pretty sure i can clear 285/70/17s with no problem.
so in conclusion i like it, i can't say anything about the bilstein since i never rode in a car with them but i am satisfied with the OME.
