Opinion on 5th gen Gobi ladder

I totally agree. You will end up replacing the roof rack. The GOBI rack inst bad, neither is the Baja Racks. Personalty I would run with which one you like the most in any company's models. Lead times do suck but that's where it is at the moment. :biggrin2:
Doesn't the rear hatch go down itself due the weight of fuel and trashroo? are the gas struts stock?

I love mine and without it and steps I'd have no way to tie to the roof rails (rago) I like putting stuff on the roof to and from camping to keep open space inside.
Can most people access the roof easy without steps?

You can step on the door sills, sliders/steps, or the rear tire and access pretty much anything on the roof.
You can also get one of these for 15 bucks on Amazon to step even higher. It's called a car cane. It won't get you as many swag points at Overland Expo though.

Honestly dont know if you're being smart but having access to the perimeter of crap and anchor points on my roof doesnt seem like a lot to ask. What do you use your rails for that is so easy to get up and down? I have a buddy with a very light canoe that was easy to maneuver but anything worthwhile I just cant reach. It may be the lift and 33s though I guess

When you need to tie down heavy 60-70lb dog crates from the top of your rack having a ladder makes it so much easier, can it be done stepping on your tire absolutely, but having to reach over a awning on one side and potentially slip on a wet tire or slider in the PNW its a no brainer just get the ladder and save yourself some time. Not sure how putting this silly step on your door sill is any better than just putting a ladder on and calling it good. Ill admit im 5'4 and even standing on my tire I am no where near being able to reach across to the other side of the rack to get something quickly on or off. But to each their own just seems like you have so much anger for a ladder :noidea:

Usually when I put stuff on my roof rack it goes,
1. Lift object onto roof (grab a buddy if you need help).
2. Get straps or hardware to secure load.
3. Stand on the door sills or tire and then strap/bolt said object(s) into place.
4. You don't need to walk on the roof. It's a car, not a treehouse.
I'm not being smart, I'm being cheap.

I tie my collapsible dog crates up there all the time. How do yours weigh 70 pounds? Do you leave the dog in there?
No anger. OP asked if a ladder would look absurd with a stock roof rack. I said yes.

I’m planning on getting one soon, so glad to be following this.
OP, my Gobi rack just showed up yesterday (Xmas miracle) and I have no intention of using the ladder....its still in the original box, ready to ship. PM me if you're interested and I can have it in the mail as early as Monday morning.
I'll also have it listed in the "For Sale" section by tomorrow.

I dont stand on the roof either lol but I do have 2 toddlers and a wife who has to manage them while I load up. Frankly in winter it's still annoying to open each door to access that area. Steps or ladder aren't that pricey given all the crap we get lol

OP, get the ladder if you want it and feel you'll use it. I personally like the way it looks, but if I never used it I wouldn't have bought it purely for aesthetics.
I used mine just last night to get up on the rack and bungee tie my Xmas tree up there. On a nearly daily basis, the kids also use it to get up on the rack. They use it as a playing and viewing platform at home and when we go camping.
I never had a vehicle before that had a ladder and I was always able to get items up and on cross-bars and cargo carriers using techniques mentioned in this thread. But after having the ladder I do actually find myself using it a lot to easily and comfortably strap down gear on the rack from the front to back without moving from side to side. I still do step on my sliders/door sills/bumper, but I simply enjoy the convenience of the ladder in lot of situations.
I find it similar to tools that I never thought I would use, but then I buy one and end up wondering how I ever got along without it.
