Overhaul of our 3rd gen

So, I guess this could be a source of the noise. When you guys say all bushings should be changed... I believe you now sorry for doubting...

Someone came and ate the bushings from this 4runner.... nom nom nom

How much of a pain is it to go and start changing these out? Looks pretty straight forward....

have him check all of your bushings and suspension components. in my opinion worn out bushings and ball joints attribute to all of the common complaints about ride quality. after replacing all of ball joints and bushings with poly my truck rides so smooth that i can tell the difference between a single bolt being tight or loose on any of my links or control arms.

if I bought another 3rd gen the first thing i would do is replace all the ball joints tie rod ends and bushings(with poly bushings). it really makes a massive difference in the ride quality and responsiveness of the entire truck. its too bad they dont make a poly set for the rear arms though.

I was just looking at rear ones, came back to this thread and saw you posted they didnt :(. I think I need them. He said the front ones were okay.

This car needs to be dipped in POR15.... Sighhhhhh.

Really trying to be a good son here, and get this car back to okay - average condition.... I don't think I can save this one guys :crybaby: Losing hope :(

Spring's wouldn't cause bouncing if I understood that post right. Sacked out/bad springs wouldn't bounce like that, it's entirely regulated by the shock.

The shocks could be bad out of the box I suppose. Highly doubtful though if they aren't leaking. Something seems off there, granted I've never experienced bad control arm bushings.

Those should be easily replaced. There ain't much left to press out. I use a bench vice and 2 sockets to press bushings in/out. Throw some lube on the bushing/control arm eyelet. Put a thin piece of wood/similar against the vice edge(s), then use the solid end of the socket to push the bushing into the shock/control arm.

When pushing one OUT, use a socket the same diameter as the shock/control arm body and the bushing slips out and into the socket.

figuring out if we want to get involved with the bushings or not. looks like rear control arms are 30 bucks each. Then I don't have a press.

I was just under the car today applying fluid film (Ohhhhh boy that felt good, I was like DIE RUST DIE!)

Anyway. I have no idea how high this mechanic was when he installed my shocks, one side the retainer is installed correctly. the other side it is not. Looking at the top, and looks like the retainers mixed up as well... I doubt that would cause an issue though. I really don't see an easy way to fix it. I don't think I want to go back there. I don't want him to touch the car ever again...

Anyway. I'm about 2 bump stops in the rear springs.... Compared it against my neighbors 2001, her's even less than mine (could have been the road). anyone know the proper way to measure this?

I pushed down on her car. and it rebounds in half the time, then again she got just a gas shocks, not OEM. interesting though, they put an aftermarket part when they got it done at the dealer......

Forgot to compare the control arm bushings.

Costco said tires needed the balance! So that was probably off. Probably fix a bunch of things.

haven't driven it yet. Still doesn't explain the bounce. but one step closer...
