that truck must of been on the beach in salt water, towing a boat in the ocean, no other way to explain. thats the only time I seen rusted trucks like this.

Nope, it's not that uncommon in the midwest, northeast where we use calcium chloride and other chemicals on the roads.

I can't seem to find out who makes the 4th gen frames but Dana, the Ohio-based OEM contractor paid Toyota $25 million for the Tacoma frame rust fiasco.

Dana wasn't penalized though for the Tundra & 4Runner frame rust of the same generation.

Unfortunately, auto manufacturers sometimes put too much trust in there oem sub contractors which can lead to a tarnished name afterwards. And many manufacturers use the same supplier.

Just look at the Takata airbag recall. BMW, Chrysler, Daimler Trucks, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota all use them and are under recall.

I just bought an 06' LTD in March & made sure it was from an owner that did annual oil spray and the frame looks good. We have to be diligent ourselves.

I have a 2003 4Runner with tremendous amount of rust underneath the radiator support is completely gone what we need to do is we need to#Toyota #Toyotarust #toyotadont care #anything that will get Toyota attention they said the more people that complain about the 4th generation 4Runner the more they will have to do something we knock on the door the quicker they will answer post lots of pictures with those hashtags via Twitter Instagram or any social media the big companies do not like that and they have to answer

I cleaned the crossmember on my 03 when I had things apart for the lift. I took my time, wire brushed it, 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of Rustoleum matte black....now it looks great!

I did the same thing to the rear bumper & hitch, I had the bumper cover off to get to the hitch. That came out great too.

My 03 is on the precipice of total frame failure. The lower cross member under the radiator is gone completely, rotted right off. Several other parts of the frame are very bad.

Such a sad thing, the truck runs and drives so nicely still. I have over 170k on it, and I still love it.

In the end, Toyota wins. I’ll be replacing it with another Toyota for sure. I’m actually considering the Highlander, the T4R has become my wife’s vehicle, so I think the Highlander would do just fine.

Got a perfect frame for complete with the fuel lines brake lines. Everything $500 and it yours. Title too but you can put your stuff on it.

I am in the same boat... I am VERY worried about my state inspection next month. I am surprised it has passed the past 2 years. It is in rough shape under there. Mine also runs and drives perfect. It is such a shame.

If it was an insane amount of work I’d consider doing that! But for what it’s worth, and at 170k+, it’s just not worth that kind of time.

I’ll be shopping for a 5th gen or Highlander....after all, it has turned into the family DD/wife’s car. My Tundra is 6 years old now, it’s officially woods/off-road ready...lol

Road salt in the Northeast is brutal on these vehicles. I had an 02 Tacoma up until November 2016, and the frame was in baaaaad shape. I'm lucky I sold it to a young guy willing to put some work into it.

With that said, when my wife got a Highlander, and I took over the 08 4-Runner, I spent an afternoon last summer presoaking the frame with Simple Green, followed by pressure washing it. Let it dry overnight, and then spent 8 hours painting the undercarriage with POR-15. It's been about 7 months since applying the coating, and it looks great! I'll have to get some pics one of these days that it's not so cold outside.

I called Toyota dealer last week and said my frame was rusted out they said bring it in that they would take pictures and send them to the head hauncho and perhaps they might consider doing something but as of right now there’s no recalls
