Price Check: 06 V8 Limited 4x4

Yes!

Is OP even reading all this wisdom we are imparting on him/her?

I am getting 16.7 mpg (2005 V8 4x4) using it on my daily commute. 22 miles per day, half city, half congested toll road. I was doing about 17.5 before I lifted slightly and added roof rack. If reset on a long highway trip (75+mph) I can average over 18-19.

I'm absolutely reading all of the wisdom and appreciate everybody's insight. I've thrown a price at the seller considering timing belt/water pump and we'll see where it ends up.

This is exactly 10 years newer than my current 3rd gen and has a lot more creature comforts, so it seems like a nice upgrade - but I'm not willing to pay a stupid price, as I can always continue the search.

I'll let the group know how it plays out.

Thanks all-

That's good to hear. I think it is funny when threads build up with tons of useful info and an OP never sees it. It serves the purpose of us all sharing pent up info about our vehicles to someone who actually asked. I envision a kid asking an older person about something that the older person never gets to talk about.

If it's lived in Colorado all its life rust shouldn't be an issue. If it's from the rust belt keep looking.

Colorado isn't the rust belt, but they still use salt and chemicals on the roads in the winter, so cars can rust faster than otherwise.

The Rust Belt is a term for the region straddling the upper Northeastern United States, the Great Lakes, and the Midwest States, referring to economic decline, population loss, and urban decay due to the shrinking of its once powerful industrial sector.

I get around 18mpg average, mostly driving around 65mph on the highway.
4runner (Toyota 4Runner) | Fuelly

Over 70-75mph it gets much worse. Around town is also much worse, especially in the winter.

It sounds like a good price if there are no issues. The issues add up real fast so it is really hard to tell if something is a good deal on here or not.

I bought an 05 4wd V8 Limited for what I thought was a good deal. I didn't think the needed maintenance and repairs would be too much but I was totally wrong. I think I have spent about $5K so far to fix this thing up.

I hear you. I bought an 06 4wd V8 which I thought was in good shape however, I ended up putting 3-4k into it in the first year... and hoping nothing goes on it for a few years.

It drives nice however, I wish I had gotten a V6. If I did it over again I would unquestionably buy a V6.

I have a 2005 SR5 V6 and a 2005 SR5 V8. I would unquestionably buy a V8 if I bought another. The V8 needed the timing belt done, but the V6 needed the head gasket. I would pick the TB over the HG for maintenance costs. The iron block (V8 - same as Land Cruiser) will definitely outlast the aluminum block V6.

The feel very different driving. Its hard to put a number to it, but the V8 just pulls smoother and accelerates effortlessly. I wouldn't have known without driving each one regularly, but knowing the difference, I would go with the V8 every time.

I love the V8. I would have a hard time buying a new 4Runner simply because they don't offer it.

I enjoy the V8 however having owned a V6 as well, I prefer the V6...

Seems like the V8 has more issues.

-exhaust manifold cracks... makes it sound bad
-emissions air injector pump swoosh/possible fail
-timing belt maintenance

I had a V6 and had no complaints. I was surprised by the money I needed to put into the V8 to fix it up after purchasing... but it is a nice truck.

on the test drive, WITH their salesman, test the transfer case and center diff lock.

in neutral, shift to 4wd LOW. if there is a slight clunk, and no beeps you are good to go. if its a continuous beep, the actuator is frozen, and is an expensive repair.

same for the center diff lock. test it. both actuators are housed in the same place, and require the same work/price to replace.

there is a very good chance neither have ever been used, and thusly it will be stuck...

Do not test drive this truck until you get a final price - because you will be sold !!! ( from a 2002 3rd Gen - 1997 3rd Gen - to a 2003 4th Gen v8)

The timing belt should be "reset" to a known date - either by seller or you. If you are mechanically inclined it should be around 500$ to do it yourself with all the fluids.

I'm from Mass, purchased my 06 V8 sport with 110k last Nov. Paid 13.5k out the door. Absolutely love the truck. Your price seems very fair, maybe see about taking a few hundred off
