Price check: 2012 Trail, 58k miles

Hey everyone: hoping I can get some second opinions on the following 4Runner I'm looking at in regards to pricing.

2012 4Runner Trail
58650 miles
One owner

Condition: Good overall-- a small dent in the front bumper and a few small scratches, nothing major and nothing out of the ordinary for a 6-year-old vehicle. Drives well; alignment is slightly off but didn't check the tire pressure...having the salesman look into this. Tires and brakes are decent; interior is clean. No curb rash on the wheels, no leaks from what I can tell. Everything seems to work.

Clean Carfax, good service records, etc. Not being sold as CPO so no warranty.

As a whole the truck seems pretty solid. It could use a thorough interior detailing but looks to have been taken care of. It lived its life nearby me the whole time, or at least was bought and serviced at dealer(s) nearby.

Asking price was ~$25,500. I offered $24,500 and was met with a middle counter-offer of $25,000 which we tentatively settled on. Since then the dealership has dropped the price a couple bucks (literally a couple; nothing significant).

KBB and the others (NADA; Edmunds) tell me it's a fair price. Figured I'd post up and ask for some other opinions, see if anyone bought anything recently with similar miles and in a similar trim/year, etc.

I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow to test-drive it again and give it a more thorough look-over, so if there's anything specific I should look for (like testing 4WD and crawling around underneath with a flashlight to check for leaks) I'll do so then as well.

So...thoughts?

I bought my 2012 from my father in law for 18k with 140K on it, the dealership wanted to buy it for 25K straight out.

No KDSS but yes, sunroof-- checked that it works. It does.

Only other option I can find is the sliding cargo tray.

I wouldn't have a problem buying it at that price. I had a 13 and the only thing I didn't like about it was the driver seat. A test drive should take care of that. And make sure all of the technical service bulletins have been addressed...if they matter to you.
 
Forgot to mention in my original post:

I'll be putting ~25k miles/year on this vehicle. So it'll have 110k or so by this time in 2020. That shouldn't worry me, right? I know it sounds like it's getting up there in mileage for "normal car standards," but I want to believe the 4Runner will be largely issue-free...
 
No warranty at all? I would ask for at least 30 days. Is there a buyback policy if something is wrong? I would not spend that much for "as is"

If you take care of it, and sometimes even if you don't, 100K is no big deal on a 5th gen.
 
I'd jump on it if it's in good shape. I bought my 2011 Trail a little over a year ago with 72k for $24k including all dealer fees and such. Currently sitting at 112k so yeah I drive even more than you. Thing is a tank and the 10-13 trails are gems!
 
drive it get it up to operating temp also drive through a narrow alley with windows down and listen for any abnormal noise and then park and look for leaks specially sides, around valve covers. also look at skid plates for oil residue.Sit still at idle and see if you feel vibrations very slight is okay but if it's pronounced then that has been an issue in some 5th gens also from a stop put it in reverse with windows down and listen for a clunk also step on the brakes and put it in drive and listen for a clunk some 5th gen had to have the driveshaft replaced under warranty also when you brake does it pull in any direction. check all the fluids and make sure they are a good color and do not smell burnt specially transmission. get under the truck and look for rust while pushing and pulling on control arms stabilizer links etc for play (bad bushings) also while under there check for scrapes and damage also look on the inside of the wheels for any leaks. good luck. the price seems pretty good.

edit: also press all buttons to see if everything works open doors look at all rubber weather strip.etc

I think there’s a 60-day state mandated “warranty,” but I’m not 100% sure what it entails.
 
I test drove a 2010 Trail with 98k miles and something was definitely not right with the trans. Shifting hard and late. Make sure it doesn’t have those issues. Personally, drive a 2018 first, then test drive the vehicles you are interested in. That way you know what it is supposed to feel like.
 
seems fair, location has something to do with pricing too. Im not too far from you. I paid $26k for my SR5 with 32k last year. One owner clean as a whistle. Im not sure on the price difference between a Trail and an SR5. I know when I was looking the limiteds with comparable milage were apx $10k MORE!

Lots of 4Runners had 100k and were around 20-22k when I was looking, I opted to dish out the other $4k for 60% less miles. I only put about 12k miles on mine annually.

Interesting how that works, isn't it?

There's a bunch of other 2012/2013 Trails with <45k miles, but they're all in the ~$30k range. Slightly less miles, but drastically more expensive...

Last July I bought my '13 trail with 24k miles for $36k. It was a one owner, CPO, and in almost pristine condition other than a scratch on the hood. I'd say go for the one your looking at as long as it checks out mechanically.

Hey Roody,

I just picked up a 2013 Trail with 84k, CPO, in New Jersey for 25.5, out the door.

Had a safety check done by a mechanic I trust, all good minus some issues with the blower.

Cosmetically it’s in great shape, couple of scratches in the paint...nothing that can’t be touched up.
