Problem with too much oil?

The other day, as I was taking pics of my fuel tank, I noticed skid plates covered it what could be discribed as old oil - black and thick. I just had my oil changed a few weeks ago. So, I didn't know if it was the motor oil. Today after work I check the oil level in my truck. It had been off for 9 hours, so it had time to settle to the bottom of the pan. When I pulled the stick the reading was well above the second dimple. Do I have too much oil in the engine? If so, how much oil should I drain?

Well even if you had to much oil it wouldnt leak out, unless maybe you had a cracked block! Sounds like it could be a blown CV axle. Which skidplate had the oil on it? The gas tank skid or the engine bay skid?

The plate under the transfer case mostly. There's quite a bit on the front fart of the gas tank plate. I have a 4WD and just had the seals replaced on the front axle.

Hmm it could be the U-Joints on your driveshaft throwing grease. Mine did that when I had them replaced.

If you don't remove the skid plates when changing the oil, it will get all over them. It will tend to pool on the rear of the 2 plates because that is where the drain plug is and because it sits lower than the front plate. Oil change places like to charge for the removal of the plates and then don't actually remove them, causing the oil build up.

Use some crumpled up, dry newspaper to clean up the oil. It will get rid of the caked on stuff too. No cleaners or degreasers, just plain newspaper and start scrubbing.

Edit: Over filling the oil is a bad thing. If it's over the second tick mark, just drain some oil out until it's at the right level.

To start off....too much oil can be as bad as not having enough. If the level is just above the 2nd dot then I personally wouldn't stress it. If its the same distance above the 2nd dot as the distance between dot 1 to 2 then you would be about a quart too much. I've noticed the oil tends to pool up on the front skid and drain backwards when I change my oil. Seems to do it when almost all the oil is out and it's just trickling out of the oil pan and instead of coming through the hole in the skid it pools up on top. This in turn gets close to the edge of the skid plate holes and wind pushes it down the bottom side of the skids as well. Not sure if it goes all the way back to the transfer case skid or not though.

If you have too much oil I would remove the skids on the front and see if you have a build up on top of the skid for one and secondly, drain some oil out with the skid plates off so you don't make more of a mess. It will be messy since you don't want to pull the drain plug completely out or you would probably drain more than a quart before you could get it back in.

I hope my wording makes sense.

It could be your power steering "gear box". I am having the same problem. The upper seal on my power steering gear box is leaking power steering fluid onto my skid plate.

Is the power steering fluid the fluid in the little plastic cup that sits in the top back right part of the engine? See pic below

If it is then it's definately not that because I look at the level of the fluid on the side of the cup which shows if it's in normal parameters. But, thanks for the response though, StreetKill. :)

As far as the oil underneath the truck goes I'm just going to do what 004Gunner said and take some newspaper and start scrubbing the excess oil off. If none appears after then we know what the problem was. If new oil appears then I know I have a serious problem.

I'll be going by the dealership to have them check the level to see if they need to drop some oil.

No that's your brake fluid. Your power steering is located on the left side towards the front of the engine. It wouldn't be a problem with to much fluid, just that your seal(s) are bad.

Too much oil

Hey all!

I recently read several forums about putting too much oil in the car. Most people agreed that there wouldn't be much of an issue. While a few also claimed "My manual calls for 5.5 and I've been putting in 6 for years."

Long story short, I put in 6 quarts when it calls for 5.5. (Sounds really stupid- but it was hard getting a read on the dipstick.) Roughly 200 highway miles later I blew an oxygen sensor in the cc.

So I would definitely pay close attention and try not to overfill. The part was $195 at AZ.

Highly doubt that half quart was the direct cause of that.

huh? Just curious, by cc you mean CrankCase or Catalytic Converter? Because the oil is in one and the oxygen sensor is in (well, near) the other, and they don't connect.

Yea me to. I put 6 quarts and it's barley over the line. Some oil filters are little bigger then others. That could have little impact. But i haven't had any issues and my friend, who's a good mechanic told me to not worry about a half of quart.

In the interests of being correct, and not confusing newbies with false information: Left is the left---or passenger--- side of the car.
The power steering reservoir(on the 5VZ V6 engine) is located at the front right side of the engine compartment. The brake fluid reservoir is at the rear left side of the engine compartment.
I once overfilled the engine oil to where it was about 3/8" up from the full mark. It did no harm.
