I thought about commenting in his thread and decided not crap it up, but he's asking way too much for that.

I don't see what is silly about the engine swap, the 3RZ is the upgraded version of the R series engines. Think 22RE with more power, better gas mileage, OBD-2 and no headgasket/timing chain worries. These things eat 30 psi (with forged internals) and pump out over 1,000 HP. Try that with a 22RE or a 3VZ/5VZ.

Because most people who motor swap aren't going to drop another 10 grand in go-fast goodies, and those who are going to put that kind of cash into their motor probably aren't going to do it to a 4Runner or with a 3rz?

The 3rz is a great engine, but it's not as powerful as the 7m, 5vze, or 350, all of which are well proven and documented swaps. I think going to the effort of a swap and then choosing a 3rz instead of a stronger motor is silly.
 
my buddy picked up a 81 pickup and he's going to try this swap down the road. I'm sure I will be helping him i think it has a 20r right now.
 
I agree, those that drop 10K into a 3RZ are drag racing, not rock crawling/casual wheeling. I bring this up because of the durability of the engine.
Each motor you listed is a well documented swap, and so is the 3RZ. Where the 2.7 shines is the ease of the swap and you won't have to upgrade your drivetrain ($$). My 1980 pickup wheels great with a 20R, why would I drop a 350 in there??? Compared to the 5VZ, the 3RZ is perfect for a swap in 4 cylinder models and it has better power to weight ratio. Not silly stuff.

I''m actually waiting for two 22-RE engines to crap out so I can begin swapping...going to be a long wait, damn reliable things.
 
My plan is also to do a 3RZ swap eventually. It would be better than rebuilding the 22RE, with more power and OBD II for the same or less money. Makes sense to me. With low gears I don't need a ton of power and I don't want the extra weight and cost of a V6. It would be different if I was trailering but, then again, I've towed a lot with the 22RE too.

I agree that $2k for a truck with a blown swapped motor is no deal.
