Rear Axle Seal

Hi guys,

Yesterday afternoon came out to a mess on the inside of my driver side rear wheel. I knew right away it was the rear seal.

Looking back I was having an issue with getting fluid up thru my breather plug. I was not able to pin-point exactly why fluid was being pushed up thru my plug. I switched to the heavy weight oil and everything. It slowed down alot in the last month, barely dripping to not dripping. I thought maybe it was excess fluid being pushed up and out from when I filled it up.

Anyway I am having the seals and bearings replaced for 325 with my local guy. I didnt think that price was to high. I am just not sure if it was the excess fluid pushing the seal out, the bearing finally giving out, or just the seal getting old. Ill find out soon enough when he tears it open.

Good luck. Hope your using OEM parts. Just the parts are pretty pricey.

Watched your video a few times, if you dont have the right press set up this can be a huge PIA. I have access to press just dont have the time to mess with it.

The price your guy quoted you is cheap considering the amount of labor involved for this job. I would charge that much in labor alone, job requires precision work.
With lube coming out of breather your getting heat from something making lube expand. Enough heat that after driving it for say 20 miles feel around on the axle at wheel bearings yoke bearing etc, should be a hot spot somewhere.

If your brakes are soft and mushy yes it can be this leaking.

But its a known issue on these 4runners for the rear oil seal to fail.

I have to say that you are the first person to state this. I had an unexplainable leak out of the breather for some time. I just kept keeping an eye on it. I could never figure out why it kept leaking. Some mentioned over fill, which I thought maybe a factor.

I would like to try your method of madness out. I agree something is heating up enough to make lube expand and come out of the breather. I switched to 85w-140 based on East Coast Gear supply recommendation (new 3rd member from them) It is difficult to get that type of lube hot enough to expand enough to come out of the breather. I am now wondering if something is not installed correctly in my 3rd member or seals etc.

Where should I be looking for extra wear and tear to cause this much heat?

Dig in get your hands dirty brother.
Are you losing brake fluid in master cylinder? well.
When filling rear Diff is best to have it setting on level ground not on jack stands.
They don't hold much, a little too much makes a difference. Well. over filled?
I have a Inferred Temp Gun. Cheap purchase. Do the drive around, park it, crawl underneath start feeling for the hot spot. Well. find a hot spot yet?
ECGS has a very good Rep for their service. Yes they could of messed up on their part. Call them explain what's going on. Well. what they say?
The third would the first place I would grab a hold of for the post drive grab.
