Thinking of fabricating my own roof rack, not sure how to attach it though. ideas?

Well, sure you can. I guess I assumed you didn't already have rails, hence the question.
I have an idea, I think you should fab something to fit in the current rails. :bigok:

I made a commitment with my top and mounted some waterproof brackets to it. Used square tubing with the ole holes all down it for my posts and rails. I used farm quick release pins so I can move my rails up, down, in, out, forward, back. It helps with cargo dimensions of course but also allows to take it all off or some off in a minute. It works well for me and I coated it with black bed liner when finished put a few small marker lights at the corners and boom! done. Depending on weight and bouncing/banging around you are going to do with weight up there will either nix the idea or produce the next best thing! good luck and don't forget, don't be shy with your ideas....afterall it is YOURS.

Bungee cords? Duct tape? Seriously, though, be careful with the factory rails--most aren't rated for a lot of weight. Those gutter mount systems may support more, safely. The 2nd Gen is only rated for 100 lbs. on the factory rails.

oh really? yeah that's not good then. How hard is it to switch out rails? I figured i'd just fab a sqaure rack basically, with cross supports across the bottom and probably a few inches high. nothing fancy, just functional to put stuff up there and mount lights on.
