I don't believe the crossbars do come off separately. If no one can confirm this I'll go check. I took my rack off a few months ago so it'll be easy to check on the ground

They come off, but not easily. It requires removing the plastic end caps which crack very easy...

There's a thread that explains the "how to", and it's not that hard. A very small srewdriver can pop the front caps off (no damage), that's what I did, then you have a small star socket to remove and one other bolt on the main bar(each side). Put towels under the main bars when removing, then just slide the cross bars out. Seriously takes 5 minutes. I did this to use lowering blocks for my roof basket. Look up the thread for more details. Cheers, G.

They slide right out once you remove the end caps. There were no bolts or screws on my 2005 SR5. I am second owner though.
I removed the rear end caps on mine in case I broke them...not quite as visible as the fronts.
Might see some photos in here that would help you get an idea of how the rails work.

Just be gentle with the end caps and a small flat bladed screwdriver and they'll come off.

Take the end caps off of the back. Then the two cross bars can slide right out the grooves that run the length of the car.

I've bent and had to replace the bars twice from running into low clearances.
