I gave this a try myself. I decided to do my lower grill first (since I wasn't sure how it was gonna work out). Got all the parts I needed at the local Lowe's for ~ $12.89 (some black mesh gutter runner, and some zip ties, and a can of gloss black plastic spray paint(not pictured)).
I removed lower grill and cut out the interior plastic gridwork with a hacksaw (you could likely use a dremel too and do it a bit neater than me to avoid having to sand like I did) to leave the frame (sanded smooth the cut marks), I then zip tied the black mesh to the back side of the grill (I used the existing holes where it clips into the front bumper cover and drilled a few holes in the groove on the sides for zip ties. Doing it this way ensures there is no visible zip ties when installed and it looks professional). When I got done, I spray painted entire lower grill gloss black just because this was my preference.

I'm really pleased with how it turned out so I'll be removing the stock upper grill next wekeend and cutting out the factory gridwork and doing this same procedure so they match.
I already have everything I need to do it, so it's free, just some time.
