2003 Acura Maintenance - Complete

Great week with my son. Off roading at Browns Camp in Tillamook State Forest, picked up a pretty nice Acura for a great price and a first car. Managed to finish up the following today aside from the T-Belt (I had someone do that during the week.

  • Timing Belt, Water Pump, Tensioner, Pulley, Cam and Crank Seals, Belts
  • New front rotors and pads
  • New rear pads
  • Denso plugs
  • New filter (went with a napa platinum - on sale) and oil - 5W-20 Mobil 1
  • PCV
  • New registration
  • Washed, waxed and partial clay bar

I honestly don't think the oil had been changed in 30,000 miles or more. BLACK - serious black. The plugs were rusted. Squeaking with every move of the ratchet. The brake pads were a smidgen away from hitting the wear indicator. Rotors were warped but we knew that when he first drove it. The timing belt looked pretty good but the water pump was getting ready to go soon.

All said and done we put about a $1000 in it and he has himself a nice car.

I'm hoping it gives him a lot of pleasure and enjoyment. He knows Dad is only a phone call away!

No gratuity shots of the post waxed TL? Inspired by your son's recent purchase, I scoped out a 05 TL-s manual as a daily driver yesterday. The big problem was the salvage title due to front end damage. Despite the extensive list of what was repaired to OEM specs, I'll wait for another one to come along.

Here's one shot after the wash and wax. Only clay-barred the hood and trunk. Had to show him what was possible. I was telling my wife last night I wanted one as well but newer! Time to shop... Exhausted from the weekend. Worked on his Acura all day Saturday before he went back to Seattle and did brakes on my wife's Camry Sunday. I still have plugs and oil left to do tonight.

That's a solid choice. I love me some BMWs, but you have to work on them and parts ain't cheap!

That Acura is plenty nice, and you shouldn't have to do any major repairs to it for a long time.

Glad to hear you found a car for your son, I bet he will really enjoy that car. The only downside I see to Acuras is having to run premium but I would much rather have to run premium and have reliability. Another thing I would like to say that it's nice to see that you were very involved in helping your son finding a car. My little brother who is 17 is looking for a first car and my stepdad(his real dad) is not involved at all. I'm the one that has been taking him to look at cars and spending hours searching on Craigslist. It amazes me that his own dad isn't even trying to be part of the process because I know it means a lot to my brother and I can see he truly appreciates my help.

Two schools of thought when buying your kid a car. Couple years ago, a local family in my town had their daughter, a high school senior, driving an old VW Beetle, with worn out tires. This girl was everything you would want in a daughter, smart, and industrious. Cheerleader, popular. Even though parents did well, she had a part time job. That old Beetle lost traction on ice one morning, and she hit a Tacoma head on. The no antilock brakes, no traction control, no air bags Beetle burst into flames when the front gas tank exploded. She had been knocked unconscious by the steel dashboard. It was a sad story.

When my kids got scholarships for college I decided to buy them a car to share, to replace the decrepit Saab I had let them use (it did have ABS and air bags, though). Went with an Accord. Air bags, ABS, traction control, modern safety features. And I made sure it had good rubber. Considered a Civic and an Impreza. They Seemed small, Accord had more mass. Sure as heck, one son hit ice in the interstate on the way home his first Christmas break, hit jersey barrier first in the front, then in the back, at freeway speeds. He walked away, unhurt. It is amazing to me that they even sell the RAV4, and that people buy it, since it failed the crash test.

My sons wife still drives that Accord, it has 200,000 miles on it now.

Yes, so far he's enjoying having a car of his own. We talked about the price of premium and insurance when we made the decision but after looking at many different cars his heart was set on the Acura. The fact that the transmission was recently rebuilt made this an easier decision. As a dad, I'm sorry that your step dad isn't a part of this lifetime experience with your brother as this is one of the joys of being a dad. I'm proud of you for taking him under your wing and doing what you can to make this a great experience. It only happens once. I'm sure you're doing your homework first, researching all the consumer complaints, looking at all the recalls, reading everything in Edmunds and KBB etc... More importantly, your sharing this information with your brother to allow him to make the decision on his own. It's all a part of growing up. Both of my boys are absolute best friends. It's good to see you and your brother in a similar relationship. I wish you the best. You're a great mentor. :trophy:
