Service wants $$ for this job?

According to my 16000km service info from Toyota Canada, they want to charge 20 bucks to perform the following "Inspect, tighten and/or lubricate propeller shaft as required**"

Uhh shouldn't this be free?

I thought it should be part of the oil change/lube job.

It's a rip off. The dealer where I live charges $28. The mechanic is already under the vehicle. $20 is a lot to grease six fittings. I can buy a lot of grease for that price. I started doing it myself.

I do it myself regularly and for that asking price you can get a grease gun and grease. Most dealers don't even bother to do it. It's worth doing it yourself. Even easier than changing the oil. The hardest part is just getting to the actual zerk fittings, sometimes you just have to move the truck a few inches back and forth so that they rotate into a more accessible position. As for tightening the propeller shaft bolt, don't even worry about it. Most members here agree that it's plenty tight and Toyota pretty much commissioned either King Kong or Godzilla to torque it at the factory (that and the initial oil filter).

I use a flexable hose on my greese gun. With that, I can reach any fitting regardless of position.
