Slack in first gear?

boondoggle

I was in some slow traffic the other day and decided to try keeping it in 1st gear. I have a 5speed w/V8 and it seemed like when I would give it gas, let off, and give it gas again… that there was, for lack of a better description, slack in the line. It didn't just go when I gave it gas. Hard to explain. Seems like it should be nice and tight and torquey though.

Do you guys feel like if your 4Runner is in 1st gear that it isn't 'tight'? As if it has to catch up to itself? Trying to figure out if it's normal or maybe I need to grease the driveshaft zerks. I don't get a loud 'clunk' when coming to a stop sign, although if I don't come to a complete stop before accelerating again I do get a series of (what feels like) downshifts then the 'slack' again.

I don't notice it in any other gear so if it is abnormal I'm not sure what would be causing it. I've driven Manual Transmission cars and other Automatics and this doesn't seem that responsive.

This evening I might try 4Lo and see if it's the same.

Thanks.

Well since none of you turkeys could pop your 4Runners down into 1st and share your experience I did some more digging.... :)

Mentioned it to a guy at work who has a Silverado and he said he has the same experience. He asked his dealer about it and they said it's due to the drive by wire system. Apparently a lot of newer vehicles have this lag.

Made sense so I searched around and that's what it sounds like I'm experiencing. Considering I drove a 5 speed GTI and a Wrangler with a proper throttle cable I'm just not used to the delay. My wife's Ford is just slow and has a CVT so it's not noticeable there.

Still exists on the 5th Gen too.

However, I found this device which purports to minimize or negate the delay. $330 is a lot though.

Don't suppose anyone's tried one?

Maybe I need a new thread that's got a mor applicable title... :)

I don't know how to answer you, but It would be cool to see what the difference is with that URD thing. I know alex56 has tuned his truck with some URD stuff to make it faster.. Always wanted to do it, but can't find anyone to help.
