The California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently introduced an interesting new concept aimed at helping people as they shop for new cars.

CARB decreed that all new 2009 model-year vehicles sold in the state must carry a sticker that details the state

What a freakin joke! Mitsi Outlander puts out the same 'carbon emmissions' as an Escape Hybrid? That was just one of many bogus things I saw in a 3 minute look.

The whole concept is flawed, IMHO. Hybrids are running the same gas engines as their non-hybrid counterparts, so the engine will produce the exact same mix of exhaust gases while it's running. I guess the theory is that the engine in a hybrid won't do as much work as it would in a non-hybrid version, so the quantity of exhaust per mile is reduced. If that's the case, now you can argue that a Hummer that is driven 7,500 miles a year is more eco-friendly than a Camry that drives 25,000 miles a year, because the Hummer is on the road a lot less and therefore creating less emissions.

I'm all for reducing emissions and being more energy conscious, but the measurements we're putting on that seem very arbitrary to me.

The problem with arbitrary or flawed measurements is that people still believe in them. Use common sense. If you burn less gas, you produce less carbon. Its called mass balance and its tried and true (crap in = crap out), same thing with heat, called energy balance or conservation of energy.

With the logic above, I don't see how a 5-speed transmission, which increases city fuel economy, can have a bigger carbon impact than the 4-speed counterpart.

I'm so sick of hearing about the whole global warming scare tactic marketing BS. I love the outdoors and am concerned about the environment, but everyone now is saying that their product or service is "greener" than everyone else's. It's just marketing fluff.

FWIW, there is a South Park episode that addresses my exact opinion on hybrids and the people who drive them. I agree that hybrids are a great technology, but don't thumb your nose at me because I drive a big, mean, evil SUV.
