Snow Wheeling a 5th Gen

I can’t be the only one on here that loves to head up in the mountains and play in the snow with your 5th Gen. I’m talking about the multiple feet deep and wet stuff not the fresh powder. There is no better way to leverage all of your traction aids: Lockers, ATRAC, Traction Boards and also test your recovery skills. Using your winch, snatch blocks, and kinetic ropes. I love my rock crawling but there is something about snow that hits all the right spots when it comes to 4WD adventure. AMIRITE?

I will if its nice cold powder; wet, thawed/re-frozen crap no way, unless I'm going to pull someone else out. I don't like to get stuck. Most of the mountain trails around here close/gate to wheeled vehicles in November/December anyway.

I must be a glutton for punishment then. Half the reason I love wheeling in general is creatively finding out ways to get out of stucks or mechanical breakdowns. Problem solving at its finest

One additional observation learned from the other weekend's trip is that snow chains are quite effective in helping to break new trail. I was originally in the camp of only using them under icy conditions. However, we had a lightweight Jeep XJ breaking trail ahead of me and after he put on chains and it was a night and day difference with traction especially laterally in off camber stuff.

This is in multiple feet of snow that had gone under several weeks of thawing and freezing.

Do you take a couple of fat friends who sit in the rear, in case you need either traction or perhaps to recreate the lost Donner party in the woods?

I love snow wheeling. The wife loves it a bit less, lol. It is super sketchy sometimes. Last time out we were on a shelf road with about a 1,000 ft drop. The road was in the sun, but it was below freezing, so it was basically turning to ice in front of our eyes. There was a group ahead of us was being led by a Suzuki that was too light to get traction and make it up the incline, so we had no choice but to reverse about 500 yards on the icy shelf. The wife and kids were less than thrilled

the best part is the patches of yellow snow...just scoop it up and you have a lemon snow cone.
