Strange thing happened at the inspection station.

I brought my 4Runner to get it's inspection sticker. As part of the test they plug into the vehicle's OBD port. When the tech went to do that he noticed I have a bluetooth dongle plugged in to run the torque app on my phone. The truck was running and when he unplugged my dongle the motor instantly died and would not fire again until he plugged the dongle back in. He was able to complete the test because the truck ran fine with the testing machine plugged in. In other words as long as something is plugged into my OBD port it's fine but won't run without.
The truck ran fine before I installed the dongle so I'm thinking the dongle somehow shorted something. Very weird.
Anyone had this happen?

That's a new security feature. Mine does not have that. Dongle can be inserted, used, removed, makes no difference on security like yours.

You can leave the BT transceiver plugged in 24/7 but the Internets all mention this type of grounding issue elsewhere in the electrical system

"The ECU may have missing ground; when you plug OBD2 scanner, the scanner grounds the "sensor ground" to the car chassiS ground( Pins 4 & 5 on OBD2 connector, IIRC) this allows engine to run"

my car cranks but will not fire up

so i have a 96 sr5 4wd and its a automimic . i will crank over all day long but wont fire up. i have replaced the battery the spark plugs, spark plug wires the coil packs and the alternator . the fuel pump is working im also going to replaces the fuel filter tommor. my gf dad thinks its my ECU witch im staring to think it is. i have also replaced all the fuse that where bad as well. on top of that my car will only lock manually and im not getting any power to the lights in the cap or to my radio but the heater works and only the driver side window will roll down. any ideas on what could be or anything eles i could look at would be a huge help.

I've heard that one should not keep anything plugged into the OED at all times. Now it makes sense.

Try swapping the efi relay with another see if it fires up. How'do you know your fuel pump is working?
