Stupid Question: Replacing a Spare Tire

I bought a 2007 SR5 and it did not come with a spare. It's got 265/70/17 tires.

Do I just need to find a rim with the correct lug nut pattern and get a similar sized tire (I don't really want to spend the money on the same tire that are currently on), or are there other concerns I need to be aware of?

If you have 4WD and your tires are old/worn, then the difference in diameter can burn out your diff. If you are just getting a spare to get you to a repair shop it should be ok but just be aware of it. That's why its a good idea to rotate all 5 tires on our trucks.

Try Salvage yards or Craig's List. Sounds like they are are sport wheels. Plenty of people change wheels after busting up one, you , might try a wanted add on your local Craig's list. Or a wanted in the classified on this site. If you have a sport model you have the larger rotors that require 17 inch wheels. If you have a limited you might have larger rotors.

I just played with my spare yesterday to ensure I knew how to do it instead of figuring it out on the side of the road. The tool kit looked unused with no paint missing, so I safely assumed my spare hasn't been touched since the factory mounted it up in 2007. There's some nice metal marks on the tire from rubbing all these years and the spare Sport rim looks shot. Finish is peeling and flaking. Thanks 1st owner and MN winters for not putting it into the rotation.

any rim or tire of the same size is fine for as long as you don't plan to use it for rotation.

My spare is secured with an aircraft quality cable and locked to the frame, i have road service and don't do any off road driving, so if i have a flat i will just have it towed home take it off go get it fixed and reinstalled.

So i don't ever plan on using my spare but can if really there is a time i must.
If and when i need new tires i will just replace all four at the same time.

Why not keep the key to the cable lock in the glove box? Save you some hassle& money soent on towing.

My soare was stolen a few months back. Need to get on replacing it...

The AWD on the 4runners have reasonable tolerance limits. You tires can be within 3 or 4/32 IIRC without damaging the differential.

If you have fairly new tires and blow one out or have to replace a non-repairable tire, some shops, including Tire Rack, can shave a new tire to match the other 3. Can save some cash when you have 3 tires with a lot of life left.
