Suspension Upgrade

I bought the Toytech 3" Lift w/spacers & rear OME coils lift and my ride is 100x worse now. I think I need to upgrade the stock shocks.

I would like some advice on which shocks to buy and how much. Also, if I get just the shocks will my ride improve a lot or would I need to buy new front coils as well? My old front coils looked a bit rusted but I'm not sure how that would affect the quality of the ride. Also, if I was to get the new shocks should I get new front coils as well or just keep the spacers?

As far as the shocks go I would just like a simple cheap solution, I don't need adjustable shocks, etc.

yeah, spacers on a 97 definitely probably won't give you a very comforatable ride. Not at all. Replacement of both the shock and the front coil spring would have been my suggestion to you.

I would recommend going with OME. The price is good as well as the lifts.
check the full kit out and disregard the rear coil, since you've got that now.

Are you running any additional weight up front? If not, the 881's will work great for you. Should lift the front almost 2.5 inches. And if you want to go the full three, just reinstall that top plate spacer that came with the first kit.

I clicked on the link and the total was $800. How much would the front shocks and the front coils cost? How much just for the two front shocks?

I think I'll like to buy the front shocks first and see how much that will improve the ride. Which shocks would I need?

describe whats wrong with the ride? are your sure it's shocks? you might be able to just get away with a roll bar or anti-sway bar, the one for the front is about 150-180.

coils about 150-200 and shocks are about the same.

like toytech was saying, you pretty much get what you pay for a BL is almost never going to be as good of a ride as a proper suspension lift for over all ride quality.


if you just feel like your floating around corners and that it sways a lot like a small tree in the wind, a sway bar may just cure things, but if the ride is just harsh and rattles your eyes out, or adversely feels like you're in a Cadillac
shocks and coils are most likely in order, be sure to figure out exactly what's wrong with the ride quality in your opinion and go from there.

you may just want to upgrade the lift anyways and be done with it.
 
The ride feels like my tires are made out of brick, very harsh. I have 33" 255/85/16 tires at 60 PSI. Should I lower the PSI a bit? The maximum is 65 PSI.

I am very interested in buying new shocks first and then seeing how the ride improves.

yeah shocks most likely will help, airing down may help as well, but that's not really a long term fix is it? go with the kit and be happy, it shouldn;t be more then $400 total if it is you paying more then you should that's 2 $100 shocks and a set of coils for $200

and i think personally you should support toytech for being a member and semi sponsor of our site here, he also seems to be a bit cheaper then some of the other big names and you know you'll get good service from him, never had to wait more then a little bit for answer and seemed willing enough to work with me when asked to. that's just my opinion though, shop were you like ;-):thumb3:
 
60 PSI in my opinion is really high! Bring it down to 37ish maybe 40 if your concerned with mpg. That alone should make a big difference in your ride comfort
 
x2 60 is very high if your not towing anything. My tires read 65 max PSI but run at 35-40 for normal driving conditions. Airing down should help some, remember that a spacer lift does nothing for ride but does give you lift.

What does the doorjamb sticker say? probably half of that. That's what you go by, not the max rating on the tire. At 60 psi you probably feel every cigarette butt and bottle cap on the road.

And if you have OME springs, probably the best riding lift there is, why get any other shocks but theirs?
