T4r to Tacoma? (Advice me!)

Whats happenin y'all, I find myself in a conondrum. I have a 4ruuner limited(wife took it upon herself to lay claim to and drive) I greatly enjoy getting out onto the trails and easily fell in love with how she handles and climbs in
4wd, and I am considering getting a newer Tacoma. My question is does anyone have any experience with taking the tacoma offroad? I jave spoken with the sales rep snakes and they try to assure me that both the Tacoma and 5thgen t4r's have the same engine but I am not convinced. Has anyone driven the new Tacoma on/off road and would it comapre at all to the offroad awesomeness that is the 4runner? Any help is appreciated fellas

Funny, I just came out of 2011 Tacoma 4x4 and went into a 2012 4runner TE, only because it made more sense for my situation. The tacoma was great offroad and I loved it. I suggest you visit TacomaWorld.com and there is plenty of reading to answer all your questions.

My off road group is generally a 07 and 03 lifted 4runner and a 2012 lifted Tacoma (the 12 just replaced his 09). They are all pretty much equal with the longer Tacoma having less breakover angle because of the longer wheelbase. The guys Tacoma has a rear locker so that is a plus. Downside to the Tacoma is it has little covered storage unless you put a bed cover on it.
Also the Tacoma is harder to turn around on tight spots because of the increased length. It basically boils down to do you want a pickup or suv. Also I would think a Tacoma would be cheaper. The 6 cylinder Tacoma and 4runner use basically the same drivetrain.

along with everything they said idk if it will help much but both vehicles depreciate at a ridiculously slow rate compared to most. BUT the tacoma holds value better! We recently got rid of ours because they AC broke though! About to trade in our other taco and our new tundra for a new taco haha

One advantage I can see having a T4r is having more weight in the rear when you are off road. An advantage to the taco is the option for a manual transmission. Both are great vehicles though.

I was thinking if they where the same motor, they must obviously have been geared different. What have you heard is different between the two?

The 4th gen and the Tacoma V6 are the same engine. The oil filter is on the top of the motor. The 5th gen uses a new style 4.0 that has the cartridge type oil filter on the bottom and has more power.
