Tail Light Red-Out & sequential turn sigs!

Hello Everyone!

I've recently been doing some inexpensive mods to my runner, one of which was a tail light red-out.

I plan on utilizing the part of the tail lights that used to be the backup lights as a second turn signal light, and maybe second brake light on each side as well- if I decide to replace the 7440 sockets with 7443 sockets (probably will). Speaking of which--does anyone out there have (2) 7443 socket pigtails that will fit a 2000 Runner they would sell?

To replace my backup lights, I got a pair of very small driving lights to mount on the underside of my rear bumper, on each side of the hitch...Not yet mounted/wired, so not pictured. Got them from Amazon, here: Navigator NV-534 Crystal Rod Fog Light Kit : Amazon.com : Automotive
I may also end up placing an eagle-eye type white LED under each tail light.

What I'd like to do since I'll have 2 turn sig lights on each side is sequence or "wig-wag" them, meaning for left or right turns, the bottom one will light, then go off, then the one above it will light, then the bottom, etc. Does anyone know how this could be done inexpensively DIY? I've scoured the net, and come up empty handed. I'm not much into light mods but you'd certainly be blazing new ground on the sequential blinking for turn signals. It looks like you have a pretty clean ride and blacked out the badging. You should follow that up by color treating the black plastic trim on the top of the rear bumper to really sharpen it up.

Yeah, actually i plan on color treating that...any suggestions? Also, this weekend i'm painting the area around the license plate black. At some point I'm going to plastidip the wheels and lower part of the whole runner black...going for the all black look.

Not really sure what these mods accomplish (seems like you're just moving lights around), but if you like them, then go for it. Since you have a 2000, if you need a wiring diagram for the new reverse lights, take a look here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...-also-how-not-short-out-your-whole-truck.html, as I did just that by following someone else's idea. My lights are tied in to reverse and can be manually activated.

Thanks for the link! ...not all mods need to be functional...these are more cosmetic. imo, the rear end looks better/unique with all red tail lights, especially with an all black color scheme. Also, there will be additional brake & turn signal lighting, and let's not forget the sequential blinkers and brighter (but lower profile) backup lights!

I've contemplated doing something similar, but I wanted to red out the blinker area and darken the red brake light a bit more but leave the reverse clear or use some lense tint lightly. I just wanted to have red blinkers. The frosted 96-2000 tails just look too dated. The all red lenses with the separately lower mounted reverse lights reminds me of my gf's '09 Scion XB!

I did my tail lights with red Dupli-Color Metalcast...I lost track of how many coats, probably 5-6, then 3 coats of clear. Came out a nice deep red, little darker than the original, but didn't seem to cut down on the light much if at all. You could easily tape off the back up light portion (and rest of the lens if desired) and change the orange to red. There is an internal lens that makes the stock light orange, but despite the orange lens, once tinted w/the Metalcast it's red. I'll put up a video, maybe this weekend showing the blinkers.

Okay, I just bit the bullet and ordered the sequential turn sig modules...I'll post video once I receive and install them...

You can buy the duplicolor spray made for cars at local lowes for 9 bucks to spray the bumper liner.

If I was going for all red taillight look, I would have used vinyl so make it look glossy and newer. just my opinion =)

What brand of vinyl did you use? How long have you had it on, is it holding up well? Any tips?
