thinking about buying a 3gen 4runner

Hey guys new to the board...im thinking about picking up a 99 4runner mostly just to play with not as a daily driver, just for snowboarding and i guess some offroading.

The 4runner im looking at is a 99 LTD 4WD with 84,XXX miles (no locker :( ), I test drove it already but it was dark out, when i checked under the car with my flashlight everything seems well greased and clean, CV boots good, all windows work including back, sunroof works fine the tracks for it look good, ant. works up and down fine, 4WD works, even wear on tires, tracks fine on the road, brakes feel good, but I did notice coolant smell in the engine bay, couldn't see any major leaks so im thinking its minor, the owner just puts gas in and takes it for oil changes he knows nothing about things that smell. (Although he did manage to put on an ulgy @ss bush gaurd which is loose btw)

The catch tank is empty, the temp gauge looks fine, it didnt even cross my mind to sniff the exhaust but i will do that tomorrow along with checking under the oil fill cap for muck, water in oil from dipstick, coolant color, and ATF smell and color.

If all of these check out fine I can't think of a reason not to buy the truck

Do you guys think I should check anything else on it?? I will be checking it out again tomorrow in early afternoon.

I would look at other 4runners but this one is in my price range of $8k and I have been looking for a while

THANKS!

the coolant could just be spilled from the little resivoir up front, and i think he meant he was going to check for water in the oil, not that he found any yet.

also 8 grand for a 99 limited with little miles sounds like a steal to me! i already have 84k on a 2002...hah road trips

Hey guys yea i meant that i was going to check for water in the oil

Well i just came back from checking it out

Happy to report that everything is fine ( no water in the oil nor sweet smelling exhaust or mucky oil cap) and I found the leak, its comming from the upper tank of the radiator...

Can't believe my dream is comming true, ive always wanted either a 93 and up toyota pickup or a 96 and up 4runner for offroading ever since they first came out.....I was just going to get a pickup since its cheaper but since my friends and I got hooked on snowboarding i figure the 4runner is better for me since we usually try to cram a buch of people in my friends other 4runners, so now we will have 3 4wd 4runners for snowboarding sweeeet! :D

well thats good to here and the 3.4L will have more power than toyotas worst engine ever the 3.0 or the 22re i have owned a 93 pickup with 22re and a 91 4runner with a v6 and that 22re had more power than the 3.0 :D

what does this mean?? do you mean the hose? you can replace the hose.

be careful, leaky radiators can be hell on engines.
