Third member/driveshaft

Hi guys,

Cant catch a break with my truck the first few months. :frusty: Driving on the highway over the weekend, heard loud noise. I pulled over and go out to see my driveshaft disconnected at the rear. :help:

Garage that my truck is currently at is looking for a complete rear assembly. I spoke with the mechanic today about looking for just a 3rd member, driveshaft and universals. I think its easier to source this then try to find a complete assemble.

Where is the best place to find 3rd member, driveshaft? I called my local pick/pull seems the few 4 runners they have already had there rear end pulled. Truck is a 2001, i have to verify but believe its 4.3 gears.

Any advice/options greatly appreciated!!

generally, 4runners with e-lockers have 4.30, most have 4.10. Axel code A030 is a 4.10 and A040 is a 4.30. What did your mechanic say was broken? If I needed a new 3rd member I'd get one that's already assembled from a gear shop like East Coast Gear. I wouldn't trust just any regular shop to build a 3rd member, they are tricky to get right.
 
Im trying to find a used 3rd member if i can but i have reached out to east coast gears based off some recommendations.

My mechanic simple put it said rear diff, driveshaft and universals. Driveshaft and universals are the easiest of the equation i am sure,.
 
Any 8" 3rd member will bolt in, as long as you can find the right ratio. It doesn't have to be from a 3rd Gen, any 4runner or pickup from like 83 to 95 will work as well.
 
Going to confirm the ratio this afternoon. Knowing that any 8'' diff will bolt up helps but still having a hard time finding many options. Going to search car-parts some more.
 
I've been a lurker here for awhile, have gone thru a lot of this.
I just today finally replaced the poor excuse of a rebuild ( 5 returns and still not right/straight) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBadA-FznF0 watch the CV end wobble, causing uncomfortable vibes over 60mph.
just today i received and installed a complete NEW rear driveshaft for my junk.

mine is V6 manual 4x4, and the truck is MUCH smoother now ( installed and test drove in the last 2 hours )
yokes, joints, slip spline, all Spicer parts.

as for your rear chunk, if you can swing it, East Coast Gear Supply, core exchange and a 5yr warranty fully assembled ready to install

I have contacted east coast gear supply, highly recommend, customer service is excellent. Still waiting to hear back from a few sources on a used diff. First source quoted me 750 for a used diff. That sounded insanely high to me since east coast quoted me 880 for a rebuilt unit, that does include core charge.

450 for a new driveshaft is another bullet i will most likely have to bit. Found a used rear but not sure the condition of the universals.


I tried to message a few 3rd gen part outs on here with no luck yet. If anyone knows someone parting forward them my way.

The driveshaft thing I'm completely understanding, I bought one from a salvage yard ($125) it had a joint tight, so I sent it to a "reputable" driveshaft shop, " the CV is bad, total rebuild cost is $255" so now I was $380 into a driveshaft,

got it back, it looked ok, accept the grease fittings were pointed all different directions, non issue, other than no real attention payed to assembly, installed it, slight vibe @70, livable, lasted 1.5 years then tossed a cap in the Cv when my wife was driving it.

Took it to a shop closer to the house, 5 times !! It shook the truck under 50mph, or at 65-70mph, one build tossed a cap in the first 1/2 mile, then they delivered it to my work, the end had been knocked out of the slip yoke,so grease would not stay in the slip. That whole fiasco cost another $250
I should have bought an OEM when I had an in at the Toyota dealer ($800 at the time)
We have been driving on the vibrio master 1000 shaft for a couple years, tired of it.
Found the wholesaleimports site, decided to give that a try. So far so good, she's driving it to work tonight, we'll see how she likes it.
