This...this is VERY bad isn't it?

So I appreciate the replies- it will not be in my feeble hands until then!
What did we do before the intraweb and this
Plethora of info?
For one thing - we overtightened the
Hell out of shit like this! Thank you.

I ponder on that question almost everyday.

I guess being a gearhead would mean you read the FSM a lot, the printed out version -- and no 'help' to lean on outside of chatting with other car guys in person.

Forum bulletin boards = mind blowing.

I suppose we can ask TheDurk, he's been around a while before forums :P

I was thinking about this not too long ago.

Back in the day, if you knew how to work on one car, you knew how to work on all of them. We pretty much relied on Chilton's and Haynes for car specific info. I had one for my '73 Audi 100LS which was the first car I owned that got a little tricky. Cars were so simple that those books were up to the task. I never even saw an FSM until the 1990s. Luckily as cars got more complex and trickier to work on, the internet came along and forums like this became an essential part of life. I never worried about torque values for anything except heads because without aluminum to worry about German torque ("gudentite") worked just fine. I still have no idea what the torques are for my 1966 IH 140 tractor or my buddy's '55 F100 pickup. No need.

I will admit the forums make it a lot easier to work on those, too. Also, you can learn a lot on a good tractor forum.

And yeah, there was a lot of in-person chit-chat. A lot of my buddies would have at least one car apart when I'd go over to visit. There was a lot of "consultation" over cold beer. My buddy Bruce's older brother was a top Mercedes mechanic. He was a big help. He loved beer.

I took this earlier in the week which led to the oil discovery.
She's not my daily driver now so who knows how long oils been leaking.

I un-built her almost entirely last spring. Probably not too popular here
as well as why "un-built" isn't a word.
Don't hate!

Good looking rig!

What bumper is that?

Parts are in.

All parts for my current valve cover replacement issue, plus oil/filter change, brakes (if needed) and tire rotation/alignment are on schedule for tomorrow and
shamefully I'll play no role aside from ordering and delivering OEM
parts to the shop doing none of it myself.
I just don't have the time. My job is very demanding
and my family suffers when I get caught up in wrenching at this
Particular juncture of life.
I'll hopefully have a success story to share soon. I dropped her off at
the shop today.
Wish me luck!

My baby is all fixed up!

And new head unit

This I actually did myself. I found a stereo that required no cutting
with the exact measurements as my old one because...well, that's
not important so let's just say I was really fond of the dimensions of
the old one.

I'm introducing my son to the finer things and feeding him a steady
diet of the high brow stuff I listened to as a teen.
