Well most commonly they have to do with the number of plys in the tire.
P is a normal passenger tire.
LT is a "light truck" tire.
Within LT there are also different ratings; C, D and E most commonly. I personally have some LT255/75/17 C rated BFG MT's and love them.
Simply put, the higher the rating, LT v. P/ E v. C, the rougher the ride, louder the tire, higher the required air pressure. On the flip side, the higher the rating, the stronger your tire, esp in your sidewalls where strength is really important.

Yes they are P rated. I went from about 3,000 miles on my AT20's before I ditched them for P-rated Nitto Terra Grapplers, which I had for another 25,000 miles and now I am on to BFG MT's, which are LT.
It is hard to make a direct comparison between the NTG's and BFG's since one is AT and one is MT but typically the LT tires are less pleasant on road.
What will you be doing/looking to accomplish with your 4runner? Better tires for looks? Will you be towing? Lots of off-roading (if so, what types of terrain will they be seeing)? These are all very important questions to take into consideration when choosing a tire.
