To have TSB 0346-09 done (Smelly exhaust) or not?

Hey guys, hoping you can help me decide on this. I have a 2008 Sport V8 with 79,550 miles and I have the horrible rotten egg smell that overtakes the cab when driving with the rear window down. I have read every single post regarding having this done and alot of mixed reviews. Should I push the dealer to have this service done under the emissions warranty or should I just say F it. From what I have read alot of people had it done and it didn't resolve it, other who says it did, and also people who had it done but it came back after awhile. I already called Bell Road Toyota and tried to discuss it with the service tech but he was pretty much a prick about it. He acted like I was a complete idiot even though I have all the facts regarding this TSB. I only smell it when the rear window is down and have to throttle it pretty good to get it to stink. My emissions warranty is close to being done so I wanted to get some idea from you guys, any success and not success stories, etc. Most importantly is there any negative impact on performance if I don't get it done? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks :frusty:

Mine 2008 does the same exact thing. I like to crack my rear window a few inches for a good flow. If I drive all but very easy it smells pretty bad. I just chalk it up to how it is.

This is exactly what I am afraid of, I really despise of taking my truck to the dealer for anything so hoping this thread will help me decide...

You could cut the resonator off and route it out the side, turn it down, or just leave it cut. Mine looks like this atm:

I did that and it didn't make any difference that I could detect. I think it's a "that's the way it is" thing and roll up the rear window if you'll be heavy on the throttle.

I have 0 smell now with the way it is, or at least so much less that I don't notice it. There's always the possibility of me having carbon monoxide poisoning, and not noticing it because of the stupor caused by it, too.

Bell Road Toyota is a no go for me. Looked at a 4runner there once. Snottsdale should explain it. Try Camelback Toyota or Tempe Toyota. I had better luck there.

I was always under the impression that you shouldn't drive with the rear window down because the airflow pushes the exhaust back into the car, exposing the occupants to Carbon Monoxide.

I'm even hesistant to drive home from Home Depot with something sticking out the back window. When I have to do this, I put all the windows down driving home.

I crack the rear window while my driver door window is down. keeps the air from being so choppy. I too have the stink getting up to speed on the freeway. I just deal with it though. Roll up the rear or roll up all and kick on the vent and/or AC.

If you can get it done, you might as well. You get some new parts out of the deal. You won't find any difference. They had the same problem with 03s and offered a TSB that did nothing. They blame the gas. That could be true, but few other cars have the same issue. You wouldn't notice it if you kept the back window up, but those behind you sure do.

I had the same problem, I removed the resonator and routed the exhaust out the side last weekend, not straight back. It helped considerably but there is a hint when I really get on it. Nothing when driving around normally. btw slight tone change when removing the resonator.
