Torque app and 01 catalyst incomplete

Evap sys errors- got them before and solved with replacing a evap sys valve by canister. My question relates to an “incomplete catalyst” status which smog shop says will fail me. I am trying to learn if I can narrow it down to o2 sensors, canister, or catalytic converters themselves using data from the Torque app. 2001 4×4 4Runner w 178K miles.

Do you know for sure that they're not coming up as 'incomplete' due to those codes?

I'd start with solving your P0440 and P0446, and see if they still come up as incomplete. My guess is that all your problems would go away together.

No but I have thrown those codes before but first time I have seen catalyst incomplete. Last time was just a single valve that solved it. I am trying to see if there is more info to be had from my current ODBII and app to shed more light and narrow things down. I was able to test all 3 valves with a 12v battery but CATs and o2 sensors are not so simple.

With that many miles did you ever replace your front A/F sensor and rear o2 sensor? If not I would do them at the same time. Most of the time the catalyst incomplete is due to the rear o2 sensor going bad, cheaper than a bad CAT. I just replaced both last week and it resolved the catalyst incomplete right away. I never got a code btw. The evap sys should go away on it's own after a 100 miles or so, if all your parts are in working order.

So, undo your ground to the battery, replace both sensors, re do your ground and drive the vehicle around. They should all show complete in about a week. Remember, the front A/F sensor affects gas mileage and the rear o2 sensor gives you the status of your CAT. BTW these all need to be complete to pass Cali smog. Good luck.

I have been fighting the Incomplete issue for years. Mine eventually goes complete but it can take months. It may be because you never drive the required cycle for it to complete. See attached TSB that tells you how to force the drive cycle:

It's a little more complex than just: "Drive it around..." I wish it specified what gear we are supposed to be in for us 5-speed owners. I'm never sure which gear is right. (If somebody with a slush box would tell me what RPM you run at 45mph and 25mph I'd appreciate it.)

In my case, I think the issue is a minor exhaust leak at the crossover to cat joint. As the exhaust is out for my frame swap, I am redoing all exhaust joints with new gaskets and bolts. Hopefully that will improve things. For the record, a URD sim does not seem to help.

I been lucky then because as many times that I've unhooked my battery mine has always switched to complete across the board within a weeks worth of driving. My commute consists of fwy and surface streets 25 miles each way.

This. Freeway miles is what does it and what some people are missing. So for a manual, that would mean cruising in 5th gear for a long sustained distance at highway speeds. If you don't live near a highway... that's when the trouble starts.
