Transfer Case Leak -- Output Shaft Seal

Hey folks,

It looks like I have a leak at my transfer case where the drive shaft connects. Doesn't seem to be the actuator, fortunately.

I've seen some of the threads (and how the problem area is knocking the staked 30mm nut) and want to give this a try.

1. But what are the part numbers for the 2 front seals?

Transfer case drive shaft output shaft isn't revealing anything for me. I'm driving a 2008 T4R Limited V8 w/125,000 miles.

I noticed a few drops on the driveway after off roading so went in and cleaned up, and saw a nice bash into the little skid plate. So changed the fluids again while I was at it (Shell Spirax at 35k) and it doesn't look like it's gotten worse (I did make a mess so it's not any not a stream or any larger puddling).

I've hearing good things about the White Shepherd Stop Leak and Conditioner from the other threads dealing with the actuator.

2. Anyone see any harm in tossing in a bottle?

I think if I understand this correctly I had that same little leak. Not enough to drip on the floor, but simply cover it with oil. Mine was right where the drive shaft connects, but in the right at the transfercase.

I had it changed. It took my mechanic longer to find the proper replacement bolts than do the actuall work. ( since they were removed I figured I'd put in brand new bolts ) For the seal they used that orange make a seal cream stuff. It really didn't cost me much.

Clean it up with a rag, if you only see it reapear at the connection point then you are lucky like me and it will cost you about 30mins work. Unless you want to do it yourself. Mine was already on the lift for tires and oil change, and I just pointed it out and snuck it in while it was lifted. It would have taken me hrs lying awkwardly on the floor working with stupid hand tools. I wish I had air tools.

Transfer case leak fix

I also had a drip from the transfer case where it meets the actuator box. A reputable transmission shop estimated it would cost $2500 to remove the transfer case in order to replace the ($5) seal.

Instead, I added a few ounces of Blue Devil Oil Stop Leak when I topped off the transfer case gear oil. It worked great. I haven't had a single drop leak out since.
