Recently my transmission began slipping constantly and not shifting as easily as it should. I took it to a shop and they told me the transmission needed replacement. I agreed blindly based only on the fact that this is a 14 year old truck. I get the truck back after the transmission replacement and it runs fine for 2-3 days. Eventually the truck runs exactly the same as before. Mad as i am, i am more interested in finding out what is wrong. I have been told by the mechanics that did the work that it could be the TCM and ECM that is making the transmission shift so poorly. Any input is appreciated!

So where did the tranny come from that they installed?...Did they rebuild it?...Buy it rebuilt?...or Was it a supposedly good one?
Its very possible the trans they ended up using was no good either. I've seen numerous Toyota trannies slip in the 4runners....also blow a huge holes in the side of their case.
I'd have to read the FSM to find if an ECM could be at fault. I could understand possible shift points being wrong, but an ECM causing it to slip....not sold on that one yet.

wow, really? The more and more i drive this truck the more and more i hate it. I had a 96' 4runner in highschool and was totally in love with it; perfect vehicle. Sadly i flipped it...anyways, the transmission that replaced the "bad" tranny is used. The mechanic still has the other transmission in his shop and swears it's no good. Should i take my truck to another shop to get another opinion?

What do you expect to glean here? If you replaced the old one with another used one, then you were probably not spending enough on it. Do you know how many miles were logged on the used one? Since it probably came from a junk yard, you should have realizing that you were getting just that, junk. I had a trainee rebuilt a while back on a Buick. It cost me about 2 grand. The job came with a warrantee. Was your job guaranteed? Transmission work is rather expensive and difficult. Before this trainee broke down, I junked another car of mine that had lost it's trainee. The guy who did the job for me brought me into the shop and explained what he was doing. A lot of it was knowledge I would never use and wouldn't remember. This is why I paid the man so much.
