Transmission tail shaft seal is "wet"

That's the news I got from the shop after I had my '02 SR5 4WD serviced today. They said it wasn't a big deal right now, but to be aware of it.

The thing is, I don't even know what this thing is. I'm heading out on about a 600-mile round trip tomorrow.

I've never had any fluid on my driveway. Should I feel comfortable making my trip?

It's where the drive shaft meets the tail housing on the transmission. you would be fine on your trip. Take a flash light with you and check it once or twice. if the seal completely fails you can loose atf fluid.

That’s the rear output seal for the transfer case. As long as it hasn’t slung gear oil onto the body then it’s not leaking that bad to be an immediate problem. I would check your transfer case fluid level though.

Thanks. I guess I've now proven that I'm not very good at identifying the components underneath my vehicle. Good thing hardly anything ever seems to go wrong. lol

Like badluck says once it's starts flinging the grease you need to change those seals. Unless you want to do them now. Just follow a video or fsm when doing those.

How about adding Blue Devil to the case?

A friend of mine had a leaking pinion seal and this stuff stopped it in about 15 miles of regular driving.

Oil Stop Leak | Engine Oil Leak Sealant | BlueDevil

They make different products for engine, trans, gear, etc

I would not do that with these cases. Good chance this stuff will gum up the Limit Switches and cause the 4WD computer to act up...

It took me about an hour to change the Front Driveshaft output seal, I imagine the rear can be done in about the same amount of time.
