Trnsmission slip.

Hello to all. New here.
Cant believe I've never joined since having Runners since '88.
My 98 4WD LTD trans slips when going into 1st.
It's intermittent. Seems to happen more on heavier braking to a complete stop followed by immediate acceleration.
I'm the anal type. Every 3 years, complete fluid change since new.
Like if you were making a right turn without completely stopping.
Step on the accelerator and engine revs but tranny not engaging.
Almost like reving on a stick, then it grabs and away you go.
Fluid is fine. Took it to the dealer but of course can't make it happen with the tech in the truck.
Any ideas?

When you say fluid is fine, are you talking about the quality of the oil (not burned)? Or are you saying the fluid level is ok? I'm not sure if you checked the level or not, but I would check that. I had a GM car a few years ago that when accelerating around a curve, it would slip out of gear because the fluid was low, and I guess the fluid got pushed to one side of the pan when going around corners (with mild acceleration).

If your fluid level is good, try that Lucas additive. I've had it stop trans slip in a couple different cars now.

Just had all fluids done at the dealer less than a month ago.
Took it back and they can't confirm the fault.
Fluid is new and topped up.
All other gears are fine. Just 1st.

IF I were to make a cursory guess, I'd say the clutch pack is going. Do you park on a hill?

How many miles?

Any codes to indicate a bad solenoid?

If you do use Lucas now, or in the future, add it in small amounts. I have a buddy whose AW4 was going south in his Jeep Cherokee (no surprise), we drained the fluid, added a 1/4 of the bottle of Lucas, topped it off with new ATF, and 15,000 miles later it is still shifting OK. Not to say it won't grenade on him sooner rather than later.

With that many miles on an original tranny, I'd have to say it is time for a rebuild or find another one in a junkyard. Congrats on getting that many miles out of it so far.

To see just how much clutch material is built up on the magnets in the pan, drop it. I would imagine you would find a decent amount.
