What do you guys think of this deal on this 4th Gen?

What do you guys think of this vehicle? I am possibly interested in going to check it out. It has 122k miles and its listed at $17k. I imagine that I will be able to talk them down at least a little.

I think that this is a sport edition, but due to the limited number of pictures I am not able to tell for sure. It also looks like the seats are part leather and part suede maybe? I have not seen this before. Is this an available option in 4runners? Or are these seats aftermarket?

One other thing that makes me nervous about this car is that there are not really any maintenance records listed on the Toyota website or on the carfax website. How is this possible? The vehicle is listed as 1-owner, and surely they have been taking this car in for maintenance, but you know what they say when you assume things

I am looking to purchase my first car and I have been looking to join the 4Runner family for quite a while now. I am inexperience at the whole car buying deal and I just do not want to get burned by purchasing the wrong car.

So I have come to ask you guys what you think about this vehicle?

That is an Urban Runner, option for 08-09. Came with Leather/Suede seats, 18" limited wheels, and a TomTom navigation system that someone has mercifully replaced already. I'm sure there are some other goodies I'm forgetting.

For 122k miles it seems a bit high on the price. You can find 06-08s with less miles in the $15k range if you're willing to be patient. That one does look clean, but be sure to inspect the undercarriage and wheel wells for rust.

If you don't have a lot of experience and don't want to get burned, think about taking it to your mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection. Worth the money to have everything checked out. Also gives you a 'bargaining chip' if there are issues.

If it is rust free and not abused, the price would be $15-16k for an Urban Runner with those miles out here in CA.

Bought my truck with 72k on it for $17k from a dealer. This seems a little steep for 122k miles.
But then again it all depends on the market and what people are willing to pay for it.

Also make sure the 4wd works, make sure you get extra keys made if they are only providing one. As rekeying, programming and such can be around $400. Just fyi

Thank you guys for the responses. I like the idea of taking it by the mechanic. Also, this is located in Arkansas, so I would assume that most vehicles would sell for quite a bit less. But I could be wrong because I have been looking for a 4Runner for about 3-4 months so far and they have proven difficult to find.

As far as Carfax and maintenance records: I had a 2009 Dodge Challenger that I bought brand new. I maintained it on schedule, including 30k tune-ups, 16k differential fluid changes, 3k oil changes, and all of the other Hemi maintenance that was required. I had my car in 54 times in 5 1/2 years with those things and warranty issues...and on and on.

When I went to trade it in for my 4runner, the Carfax was completely blank. Nothing other than the first registered report. However, the Dodge Owners Website had pages and pages of info on it--which I was only allowed to view when signed-in on my account. Shortly after trading it in, I could still access the site, but, that car wasn't listed under my account anymore. I still have the paperwork and my car was only ever serviced at one very large dealership. It's obvious that they didn't report anything to Carfax.

Just my experience with how inaccurate Carfax can be.

With respect to what the poster above said, get the VIN and put in into the toyota.com owner's site and look at all the maintenance. If there is no record it was probably never serviced at Toyota, so do some digging. This information can also be used to haggle price.

Make sure to have the XREAS checked. Mine went bad at 120k miles. It aint cheap to fix and might be why someone traded this one in. Have the CV's checked at the same time. If you are planning on upgrading the suspension then not an issue, if however you are hoping to spend $17k and be done you are in for a BIG surprise. Do a search on the forum, if you have XREAS it will go bad at some point.

Up here $13,900 USD ( $18,500 Cdn ) will get you a pristine 2008 Limited with 109,000 miles ( 175,000 km ).

up here $11,000 USD ( $14,600 Cdn ) gets you a 2006 limited with 107,000 miles on it, with a new grille, new hood deflector, new water pump, new timing belt, and new 4WD actuator thrown into the deal.
