I had my skid plates off today and I found this sitting on my front skid plate. It's a little over 1" square and says "N018" at the bottom. Any ideas what it is?
Looks like the shim for the brake line on the spindle to me.
It's like 1/8" thick. I think the shims you're talking about are those thin sheet metal ones?
+1 for brake shim
It's not the brake line retainer clip. Similar shape but the retainer clips are thin and flexible. This is thick and rigid. Plus I just checked and both of my retainer clips are in place. :thumb:

Well, those aren't used on a 4Runner... they are for old-school muscle cars and similar. So at least YOUR truck isn't missing anything...Well done sir! I just had an alignment done last week so it doesn't give me warm fuzzies that it was just chillin in my skid plate.
Yeah, just called the shop and confirmed. He said the 4runners don't use shims and also said that body shops sometimes use them as body shims. I had body work done like 2 years ago so maybe it fell out of a fender or something.
It's possible they just dropped it and didn't bother to find it. Hence why it was left there too..

Ah. In that case, it come loose and odd something..Well I had the skid plates off 8 months ago and it wasn't there. It's been to 2 or 3 alignment shops since then but hasn't had any other work done aside from oil changes and tire rotations.
For it to have come from the fender and land in the skid plate, I'd think it would have had to have been under one of the bolts that runs along the top of the fender but there aren't any gaps there. It's a mystery for sure!
