Want a good shovel/kill tool?
Go to a surplus store and find an original (not a new knockoff) Vietnam era USMC issued folding shovel. About a foot square and 2" thick when in it's case - you'll never find a tougher one. They are all metal and all business. Got mine at the PX in the early '80s, now lost to time and I want another one. This is not just a digging/hacking tool - it is meant to also be a weapon, so check with local law enforcement.
You're looking for an Ames 75 or earlier series, do not buy them off Amazon as they are trying to sell imported, junk knockoffs. The original Ames is full tempered steel, almost impossible to even dull it.

an ax and a small digging shovel will do. there's no need for maintenance for it. only your muscle. and besides, how often are you going to use it?

Folding Shovel and Pocket Chainsaw

I've got this shovel that I've used a few times on the trail and at camp sites.

And I recently bought a pocket chainsaw that I now keep in the 4runner. I haven't used this on the trail but I've used to to do some tree trimming at home. The thing cuts fairly easy and you could get trough some larger branches with it.

Axe never, but I found a nice small hatchet I wouldn't mind having.

Shovel, pretty much 100% of the time. Valuable when I was a noob, but these days the only time it gets used is when I need to clear or make a fire pit. Also for taking a #2.

I don't own anything fancy, $10-15 home depot shovel on my roof rack works great.

As far as the hatchet, friend got this, its pretty nice, but I dont think it would get much use as I spend 80%+ of my time in the desert.

I just use an old long handled shovel for the beach, but for camping a entrenching tool and a silky
The silky is pretty compact and cuts really well. We will also throw a maul into to our 4x8 trailer, for splitting wood

I carry an inexpensive wooden handled shovel, and a small buck saw that fits nicely under the rear seats. Unless you're a skilled lumberjack, even a small handsaw is much more efficient and safer than an axe for cutting branches greater than 4 inches or so.

SOG shovel

I figured id drop this link since others were doing similar. this is less than the gerber one and has good reviews. i have used it to de root a camping site and itd work well to digg around tires etc.

as someone above mentioned, saw's work more efficiently than an ax for many applications. i carry that shovel a machete and sometimes a hatchet, once again.

for my house and bonfires etc i keep a gerber 23" ax and i must say its pretty kickass.

I'm happy to see the fiskars axes being recommended here.

I hit myself in the shin with one of the 36" splitting axes from them when I was 17. While I dont recommend doing that, if you have to, the fiskars are what you'd want to do it with. A clean, straight cut because they're good and sharp makes it easier to get stitched back together nicely.
