How to take apart the 4th gen A/C controls

I know this may not be a hot topic, however, it does come up from time to time. I took some pics and mostly just circled the screws to come out in yellow w/ yellow arrows pointing to them as well...

Here you see 6 screws need to come out. 4 in the top panel, and two in the lower panel.

Next, to remove the circuit boards from the plastic housing completely, remove the 2 now exposed screws on the bottom circuit board. The top half will already be loose.

The ribbon cables will have to be released as well. Simply (*carefully*) lift up on the white plastic tabs on both sides of the ribbon cable. You will feel it pop loose. Pull the ribbon cable out of the socket on the circuit board.

This is what you will have once removed from the housing. If need be, you can take it apart further by removing the small screws, but I didn't go that far.

To remove the big switch assemblies, disconnect the ribbon cable as described earlier, remove one screw each, and it will be held in place by a small plastic piece. It will just push through now and seperate from the housing as well.

Hey cool guy! Thank you so much for doing this as I have tried to explain it at least tree times in the last couple of days. I always feel like I'm trying to describe a spiral staircase without using my hands. This really shows it like it is. You ought to make it a sticky given the number of people wanting more information about this area. At least now I can send them to this spot. I'm still working on that other project and am nearly done. I'll try to post pics if I can.

My bulb is out too (the center one on the very left that shows the fan speed), but it is soldered on. Any ideas what bulb to replace with?

Awsome thread! Dealer wanted like $200.00 to replace all my center console lights. I spent $25.00 on the bulbs and did it myself in literally less than 30 min

I have a 03 SR5, the limited takes dif bulbs I think.....Here are the following part numbers and quantities. I had the dealer print out the diagram of the control unit to show me which part #'s went where.

(3) 90010-09015
(2) 90010-09017
(1) 90010-09018
(2) 90010-09019

I didnt take any picks my self, my digital cam is broken, but view this thread and scroll down a ways, How to Remove the Navigation Head Unit from a 2003 Toyota 4Runner, this guy has some good pics on how to do it. I had my laptop in the passenger seat and followed his instructions as I went. Be careful when tightening the new bulbs in, is it is easy to strip the flat head slot in them. Honestly its easier than an oil change. It will take more force than you initially want to pull the control panel off, but thats how it needs to be done. After replacing the new bulbs mine snapped back in very easily. When following his thread once you pull the AC control panel out and unhook the cable, you wont need to take the control panel apart any further as he does in the thread. You can change the bulbs from that point and snap it back in . Let me know if you guys have any more ?'s I will help with what I can.
