whining noise 03 4runner V8

I'm experiencing a whining noise only during acceleration at 80mph which slowly goes away at 95mph.

This only happens during acceleration, and when I let off the pedal it goes away.

The dealer and Toyota rep refuse to test over the speed limit, yet the warrenty does not exclude speed.

What can I do. It sounds like its comming from the front diff, and since its a V8 its a full time system.

Stay at or below the speed limit? :)

Is it a high pitched sing? Could be gear noise that just happens to resonate under power (acceleration) at high speeds. Check the front differential gear oil level.
 
whinning noise '04 sport v8

just hit 1k miles on my new '04 and just like jason_4runner posted while back i have the same issue

problem is when your around 75+ and going higher, or trying to gain speed you hear this whinning noise, it's a bit hard to explain but it's going back and forth, when you do finally reach around 80-90, or press pedal more it eventaully goes away. It's getting louder at those speeds and now i'm feeling everytime it whines a little bit of feedback/vibration on the pedal as well. Becoming very annoying. Anyone else experienced this? Could this be another lubing issue much like the breakin clunk noise? thanks in advance for replying with any help.

Its getting worse, and Toyota aknowledges but doesn't have a resolve.

Place your complain on NHTSA website. The more complaints it gets with the same issue, Toyota may research and fix
 
besides whinning

jason besides whinning does your do this type of sound during acceleration to 75+(starting from 72mph upto 80mph) ,a lets see how can i recreate this, like a

"wooo, wooo, wooo, wooo" sound, eventually speeds up and goes away after you hit 82+, you let go of the pedal it stops, now this is what i'm feeling in my gas pedal as well, every time i hear it i feel renasance in pedal just a tad, like unbalanced tires in a way but it aint the tires.

anyone else took their 4runner higher then 70mph?
 
Yeah i think i have the same noise...i would say 75-80 i hear it...a faint whine/whistle when i step on the pedal...no idea what it is....i guess i will just drive the speed limit so i dont hear and and dont diminish my mpg even more...let me know if anything comes about with this

Yep same here. Its not the tires.

It is the front differential, and only on the V8 models, as the front diff is always spinning.

Driving slower isan't going to make it better, you just won't hear it, but its still a problem that will worsen.

I think we should get together as a group and file a complaint with Toyota corporate.
 
hello! new to forum and looking forsome info/help.....

bought the gf an '04 Sport with the V8/AWD. took it on a long road trip over x-mas and noticed what seems to be described in this thread. at exactly 71mph you start to hear a cyclical noise (about 2-3/sec) that increases in frequency as vehicle speed climbs. no vibration in steering wheel or pedals. but both driver and passenger feel it in floorboards and hear it. disappears at 82-85 or so, and as soon as foot is removed from the gas pedal. dealer claims no known issues.

seems like there are a few of us out there with this problem.

any info/help would be appreciated!

The dealer is going to claim that their are no known issues because their sales would hurt if they admitted there is a problem. You need to get the District service manager involved in a test drive.

Toyota aknowledged the problem, but needs you and more people to complain about the same issue before they research and alternative differential design.

I brought my 4runner to a 4wd transmission specialist, and they said its an undersized differential for a full time system for the weight of the vehicle.

They said the barings will eventually seize, and most likely after the warranty. Replacement costs are $2000 and up.
 
Another good reason to get the extended warranty. Let's hope that the independent 4WD shop you went to had a more qualified engineer than Toyota. LC's have diff problems as well, which makes sense as the Runner and LC now use the same powertrain.(V8)
 
whining noise continued

guys toyota will not research anything and come up with a solution in reasonable time frame. Mine runs with all that noise, as long as it runs it's good, but if i start experiencing more or vibrations hit hard, i'll defentely bitch, in the mean time the whinning noise and the unbalanced noise feel is alot more clearer in tempatures of 40f and below. Also i found out that the woo, wooo wooo noise happens at 55mph, sometimes, very hard to recreate at that speed. it going away is what's making me not bother too much about it, when you hit over 60 and over 82 sounds like anormal engine sounds is ok. Damn it it is annoying though. I'm goign to take it in for oil change soon here @3k miles, and have a engineer look at it and drive with me, see if he knows or comes up with anything, i'll post what i find.
