As for mounting inside the vehicle, I have done this with success using a tripod in the passenger seat. I set it up with two legs on the seat, and one extended down to the floorboard in front of the seat, then strapped it down with a cargo strap for stability. This way, you have standard camera mount to screw the camera onto, and you can aim it however you want before filming. It gives a nice passenger-eye view looking out the windshield.
