By doing what? Torturing them? Bullet to the kneecap before they bleed out? Bamboo under the fingernails? Make them watch a Vin Diesel movie with you?

You would have done worse after you found out it was an unarmed, drug-using teenager who posed little threat? And after being shot, poses none whatsoever? Did you put a lot of thought into that post?

Once again, you can use the force necessary to protect yourself. Bang. Assailant/intruder is down. No more threat (unless you can articulate that an 18-year-old girl with at least one bullet in her, lying on your basement stairs bleeding to death, is still a threat - good luck with that).

If you do something after that beyond calling 911, YOU become the aggressor because it's no longer an issue of "self-defense." Courts have held this opinion for a looooong time. This is why police officers get smacked for excessive force when they continue to take action against someone who is no longer a threat to them - like someone who turns and starts to run away (unless they're a felon who poses a danger to others - different rules, there).

Switching topics - as far as tactical advantage, if you're in a corner in your own basement with guns, my opinion is that you don't really need an escape route. Not given the high probability that the intruder is like the vast majority of burglars: unarmed opportunist, interested in taking things without getting caught, and not too bright.

They basically can't do squat to you before any 911 responder can arrive.

My tactic would be to aim in on the door, rack the action on my 870, and make some noise. I think you will hear running feet and a few crashes as they fall over furniture, each other, and whatever else is in the way to get the hell away from your house. Not pretty and doesn't sound as cool as saying I'd make them "beg for as bullet," (??) but my goal would be for these folks to GTFO - not to make everyone on the internet admire my self-claimed proclivity to violence.

If they're the 1% of home invaders that are not deterred by that or by hearing the homeowner say "I'm calling 911," then you haven't given up much. Yeah, they know you're in the basement, but they also know you're armed and you're still aimed in on the door. That will also help justify any action you need to take after that ("Your Honor, my client indicated that he had a firearm AND announced that he was calling the police...")

Would I worry about them coming back because they hold a "grudge?" Um, they probably won't go anywhere NEAR my house, ever again. Having to change your drawers after being in someone's gun sight tends to do that to people.
