I personally shoot on Nikon, but our work is mainly done on Canon's. You really can't go wrong with either platform. Just keep in mind that once you choose one, it's a bit harder to make a switch as you start building your lens collection. Do any of your friends have DSLR's? If so, having one that matches their lenses might be helpful as you could borrow them from time to time.

Does anyone use Nikon's Capture/View NX2 software? It is TERRIBLY slow on my computer (I meet the hardware requirements) and before I spend money on Capture NX2 or Lightroom, I'd like some input as to which y'all prefer.

Keep in mind that a lot of the photo hosting programs degrade the photo when you load it. I personally use either my retina MacBook Pro or my iMac.
I never use the NX software. Lightroom. But I am considering a switch to Aperture.
