How bad is .45, .40, and 9mm in something polymer and compact or subcompact?
I'm torn between some smith and wessons and some glocks. I have a full size m&p 40, full size glock 22, my dad has a glock 23, and a sig 226 chambered in .40. I recently fell in love with 1911's and the .45 acp and am wondering how bad the kick and recoil is in a compact or subcompact polymer frame.
any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Personally, I wouldn't do a 45 in a compact polymer. If I was going to carry a 45 it would be full size or in an all-metal gun, preferably full SS (like the Kimber I used to carry). In short distances it doesn't matter but as range increases it become harder to make accurate follow-up shots.
I've shot compact 9mm, 40, and 357Sig in compact polymers, either Glocks and S&W M&P Compacts, and all are doable with some practice. Unless you are talking pocket pistol, they are fairly similar in size and concealment. If pocket pistol, I'd stick to 380 or 9mm.
I have to say the 357 Sig is my new favorite round. It's basically the cartridge of a 40 with the bullet of a 357... quite accurate and manageable in a compact. The ammo is a bit more expensive than 9 or 40 and can be challenging to find sometimes, but I like it enough to deal with it. Supposedly it's also a new favorite of LEOs too.
As for brand preference, it's just that. I like Glocks - I miss my G26 - but am fairly happy with the M&P 357C. If you go this route, look for the LEO version if you can find one. It comes with a third mag for roughly the same price.
