When you get to those areas, slow way down and talk your way through the area with your son. Point out the fall zones, note the condition of the trail and weather(wet, frost, dry, etc.) and make sure he maintains 3 points of contact with the trail at all times. If only one limb is moving at a time you can truly minimize the possibility of a slip.
It looks like the others have hashed out all the major stuff. if you plan to do this sort of thing more often, buy a
SPOT to keep in contact with the rest of the family, just in case. Those gadgets are one of the most useful pieces of equipment you could bring, besides a well stocked med kit.
