Ham license is approximately $15. The test study materials is free online and shouldn't take more than a couple days of looking it over. The license is good for 10 years! It comes in 3 different levels. When you sit for one test you can sit to take the others in sequential order and it's all covered under the one cost.

No shit? I always figured I would have to go to some class and then study weird codes and stuff for months...then pay a boatload for the actual license. None of which appealed to me especially since I don't like to sit around talking too much. I've always just like the idea of a HAM radio for emergency situations.
I'll be looking into this for sure.
