You make a good point. Here are some random load tables I googled from a manufacturer of square posts. He could lose 75% of his section and still have a nice safety factor.

Haha. Reminds me of an episode of "Big Bang Theory" when Penny needed a simple bookshelf from IKEA assembled and it ended up with heat sinks, torches and liquid nitrogen plumbing...

Edit: I did take an elective class in wood structural design my senior year... learned a LOT about laminates lol.
