What kind of towing? My 04 tacoma has a 5000lb tow rating and honestly it feels like it struggles at high elevations on steep grades towing just a 1600 lb trailer.

If you're just towing flat then yes a gen 2 is fine. Might struggle in the steeps but a gen 3 probably will also. At least with the gen 2 you get that proven 4.0.
