Yes, unlike the Honda Pilot, with the 4runner you can lock the 5 speed auto transmission into any gear. Toyota recommends 4th gear for towing.

Thanks. While I would love the extra torque of the v8, the mileage would hurt...as I likely will do about 20k miles a year. Based on the limited boating season (in New England) and that I doubtfully would get a heavier boat, I'm thinking the 6 will be more practical & economical for me.
BTW, nice pup in your avatar. If I pull the trigger on the 4Runner and get active on this board, I'll have to create an avatar using my new Golden puppy.
