You can't beat a charcoal fire for flavor. I use oak lump charcoal. I usually use Royal Oak lump in the big bag or the oak lump that Academy Sports sells. I don't like Cowboy lump that you get at Lowes and places. I find the consistency in size and type of wood isn't there and I also find lots of rocks in it.
In addition to the lump, I usually throw in a couple of chunks of mesquite, hickory, cherry, apple or pecan depending on what I'm cooking. Mesquite is my go to grilling and smoking wood for most things.
