By now it was approaching mid-afternoon and we still had a lot of ground to cover, we decided to pick up the pace and try to get to Ellis Jeep trail before dark. As we worked our way around Hahn’s Peak we saw what looked to be a fresh wildfire burning in the direction we were headed, we continued on hoping that it wouldn’t ruin our plans for the day.

It wasn’t long before we hit the easy dirt access road to Ellis Jeep trail, we drove for a couple miles before running into a Forest Service fire truck. We were notified that the fire was directly were we wanted to go and they were evacuating the area, we had to no choice but to turn around and leave the area. Looking at our maps we found a route around the burn area that would connect back to our original route, but bypass Ellis. By this time the sun was getting low, and it was time to find a camping spot for the night. We found a side road and camped at the first site that was acceptable.

The following morning we woke up, packed up camp and hit the road. The road was smooth and fast, and it wasn’t long before we crossed over into Wyoming.
