You are going to laugh at this, but for starting a campfire, use Potato Chips/Doritos/etc. The oil in the chips will start the kindling and keep it burning. My next door neighbor showed me that trick and I was surprised how easy it started the fire and kept it going.
As for sleeping in a tent, I have a coleman cot with foam mattress. My back cannot take the hard ground anymore. However, the cots take up space in the car, so your foam sleeping pad may be a better alternative.
