With a few wraps of teflon tape, it leaked. With no tape, it leaked even more. With SEVERAL wraps of teflon tape, leak finally stopped. Is that in any way normal? I ordered another reducer hoping that's the issue. Or should I just not touch it since there is no leak
Link the adapter you purchased. Was the leak on the 1/2" angle stop side or the 3/8" faucet side?

The 1/2" fitting is NPT and those require pipe dope, Teflon tape, or both. The 3/8" fitting is a compression fitting. The thread count and pitch is different then NPT. Those should never require either tape or dope. There's a rubber seat washer in the sink supply line that creates the seal.

As long as you have the correct reducer and the leak was at the 1/2" side your fine. If the leak was at the 3/8 side you could have the wrong reducer or a bad washer in the sink line.
